OUR PROCESS

Here is how we deliver quality noisy aircon service

1

Noise Identification

We listen carefully to your aircon in operation, identifying the type of noise (rattling, buzzing, clicking, grinding) and pinpointing whether it comes from the indoor unit, outdoor unit, or piping.

2

Component Inspection

We open the unit and systematically check the blower fan, motor bearings, mounting brackets, panel clips, and all fasteners for looseness, wear, or damage.

3

Root Cause Diagnosis

Based on the noise type and inspection findings, we identify the specific cause — dirty fan imbalance, worn bearings, loose panels, compressor vibration, or other issues.

4

Repair and Testing

We perform the necessary repair — cleaning, tightening, lubricating, replacing parts, or adding vibration dampening — and test the unit to confirm the noise is eliminated.

Your Aircon Should Be Whisper-Quiet — So Why Is It Not?

A modern aircon is engineered to operate at barely above a whisper — typically 20 to 35 decibels for the indoor unit, which is quieter than a library. When your aircon starts making noises you have never heard before, it is telling you something is wrong.

At Coolbest Aircon, we have spent over 18 years fixing noisy aircon units across Singapore. We have heard every type of sound — rattling, buzzing, clicking, grinding, squealing, dripping, and hissing — and we know exactly what each one means. More importantly, we know how to make your aircon silent again.

Ignoring aircon noises is never a good idea. What starts as a minor rattle can escalate into a major component failure if left unchecked. The earlier you address a noise, the simpler and cheaper the fix.

Common Aircon Noises and What They Mean

Rattling or Vibrating

A rattling or vibrating sound is the most common noise complaint we receive. It can come from either the indoor or outdoor unit.

From the indoor unit:

  • Loose front panel or clips — Over time, the plastic clips that hold the front panel in place can weaken or break, causing the panel to vibrate when the fan runs.
  • Dirty or unbalanced blower fan — When dust accumulates unevenly on the blower fan blades, it throws the fan off balance. The heavier side pulls the fan shaft, causing vibration and a rhythmic rattling sound.
  • Loose screws or brackets — The mounting plate, internal brackets, or motor screws can gradually work loose from constant vibration during operation.

From the outdoor unit:

  • Worn vibration dampeners — The rubber feet or pads that cushion the compressor can deteriorate over time, allowing the compressor’s vibration to transfer directly to the mounting surface.
  • Loose compressor mounting bolts — Similar to the indoor unit, bolts can loosen over time.
  • Debris in the outdoor fan — Leaves, twigs, or small objects can get caught in the condenser fan, causing intermittent rattling.

Our fix: We identify the specific source of the rattle and address it — tightening loose components, cleaning and rebalancing the blower fan, replacing worn dampeners, or removing debris from the outdoor unit.

Buzzing or Humming

A low hum from both the indoor and outdoor unit during operation is normal. What is not normal is a buzzing that is significantly louder than before or one that starts suddenly.

Common causes of abnormal buzzing:

  • Failing motor capacitor — The capacitor provides the electrical boost to start the motor. When it weakens, the motor strains to start, producing a loud buzz.
  • Loose electrical connections — Vibration can loosen wiring connections over time, causing electrical arcing that produces a buzzing sound.
  • Compressor strain — A compressor that is working harder than normal (due to low gas, dirty condenser, or internal wear) may produce a louder hum or buzz.
  • Transformer noise — In some units, the control board transformer can vibrate and produce a buzzing sound.

Our fix: Electrical issues require proper diagnosis with testing equipment. We check capacitors, connections, and component function to identify and resolve the buzz source. Capacitor replacement is a straightforward repair that we handle on the spot.

Clicking

Single click at startup/shutdown — This is normal. It is the sound of the relay engaging or disengaging the compressor.

Repeated or continuous clicking:

  • Faulty thermostat relay — The thermostat continuously tries to engage the compressor but fails, causing repeated clicking.
  • Defrost cycle issues — In some units, clicking during defrost indicates a problem with the defrost control board.
  • Control board malfunction — A faulty control board may send erratic signals, causing the unit to click on and off repeatedly.

Our fix: We diagnose whether the clicking is from a relay, thermostat, or control board issue and replace the faulty component.

Grinding or Scraping

This is a sound you should not ignore. Grinding or scraping indicates metal-on-metal contact or a component rubbing against something it should not be.

Common causes:

  • Worn motor bearings — Fan motor bearings can wear out, causing the motor shaft to grind against the housing. This sound typically gets progressively worse over time.
  • Displaced blower fan — If the fan barrel shifts on its shaft, it can scrape against the housing or the evaporator coil.
  • Ice rubbing against the fan — When the evaporator coil ices up (usually due to low gas or dirty coils), the ice can extend into the path of the blower fan, causing a scraping sound.

Our fix: Bearing replacement, fan repositioning, or addressing the root cause of ice formation (which may require a chemical wash or gas top-up).

Squealing or Screeching

A high-pitched squeal or screech is usually related to belt or bearing issues.

Common causes:

  • Dry motor bearings — Bearings that need lubrication produce a high-pitched whine that gets louder as they deteriorate.
  • Belt slippage — In some older or commercial-type units with belt-driven fans, a worn or loose belt can slip and squeal.
  • High refrigerant pressure — Excessively high pressure in the system can cause squealing sounds from the expansion valve or piping.

Our fix: Lubrication for dry bearings, belt replacement for worn belts, or system pressure adjustment for refrigerant issues.

Hissing

A hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor unit or along the piping can indicate:

  • Refrigerant leak — Gas escaping through a crack or loose connection produces a distinct hiss.
  • Normal expansion valve operation — A mild hissing from the indoor unit can be normal as refrigerant flows through the expansion valve. But a loud or new hissing warrants investigation.

Our fix: We inspect for refrigerant leaks using pressure testing and soap bubble methods. If a leak is found, we repair the source and top up the gas.

Water Dripping Sounds

Hearing water dripping inside your aircon — even if no water is visibly leaking — indicates a drainage issue. Water may be pooling in the tray and intermittently splashing onto the fan blades instead of flowing out the drain pipe.

Our fix: We flush the drainage system and ensure proper water flow. This is often resolved during a chemical wash. If water is also dripping externally, see our aircon leaking water repair service.

When to Call for Help vs When to Wait

Call immediately if you hear:

  • Grinding or scraping (metal contact can cause rapid damage)
  • Continuous loud buzzing (may indicate electrical issues)
  • Hissing from pipes (potential refrigerant leak)

Monitor and schedule a service within a few days if you hear:

  • Intermittent rattling (likely loose component)
  • Slightly louder hum than usual (early sign of wear)
  • Occasional clicking during operation

Normal sounds to not worry about:

  • Single click at startup and shutdown
  • Low, consistent hum during operation
  • Brief gurgling when the system first starts (refrigerant flowing)

Noise Prevention Through Regular Maintenance

Most aircon noises are preventable with regular maintenance:

  1. Schedule a chemical wash every 6 months. A clean blower fan stays balanced and runs smoothly. Dirty fans are one of the top causes of vibration and noise.

  2. Clean your filters fortnightly. Clogged filters force the system to work harder, increasing noise levels across all components.

  3. Annual chemical overhaul. A yearly deep clean prevents the heavy buildup that causes fan imbalance, drainage noise, and other sound issues.

  4. Keep the outdoor unit clear. Remove debris regularly and ensure nothing is resting against the unit that could rattle.

  5. Address minor noises early. A rattle that costs S$50 to fix today could become a S$300 motor replacement if ignored for months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about our noisy aircon service

Why is my aircon suddenly making a rattling noise? +

Rattling usually indicates a loose component — a front panel clip, screw, or mounting bracket that has vibrated loose over time. It can also come from a dirty or unbalanced blower fan. Our technician will identify and fix the source.

My aircon makes a buzzing or humming noise — is that normal? +

A low hum during operation is normal. However, a loud or new buzzing sound can indicate a failing motor capacitor, compressor issue, or electrical problem. If the buzzing is noticeably louder than usual, have it checked before it becomes a bigger problem.

Why does my aircon click when it turns on or off? +

A single click when the compressor starts or stops is normal — it is the relay switching. However, repeated clicking, rapid clicking, or clicking that occurs while the unit is running can indicate an electrical issue, failing thermostat, or compressor problem that needs attention.

My outdoor compressor is very loud — can you fix it? +

Yes. Loud compressor noise is often caused by worn vibration dampeners, loose mounting bolts, or debris caught in the fan. In some cases, the compressor itself may be failing. We diagnose the cause and apply the appropriate fix.

Is a noisy aircon dangerous? +

Most aircon noises are not immediately dangerous, but they often indicate a problem that will worsen if ignored. A grinding noise, for example, can mean metal components are rubbing together and wearing down. Catching it early prevents more expensive damage.

My aircon makes a water dripping sound inside — why? +

This is usually caused by condensation water not draining properly — it drips onto the fan or inside the unit instead of flowing out the drainage pipe. A drainage flush or chemical wash typically resolves this. See also our aircon leaking water service for related issues.

How much does it cost to fix a noisy aircon? +

Simple fixes like tightening loose panels or cleaning a dirty fan start from S$50. More complex repairs involving motor bearings, fan replacement, or vibration dampening range from S$80 to S$180. We always quote before proceeding.
